Tobacco Kiln
Paper Clay / toxic fumes?

So I’ve made many tobacco pipes, etc. out of clay, but it’s a pain because I don’t have a kiln.

I know that a lot of man-made clay can be dangerous when you burn it… but I was wondering if it’s safe to make things like pipes, ashtrays, etc. out of Paperclay? Or can that just cause toxic fumes?

the paper clay I am familiar with does just have paper fiber mixed into normal clay for kiln firing. You can mix many different fibers into clay. It generally makes the resulting (fired) product more lightweight, but depending on the amount of fiber also more breakable. Before it’s fired the fiber gives the greenware better stability and it makes it easier to rewet the clay and keep it workable. I think it’s mainly of an advantage if one wants to build a large sculpture.

I don’t think it would be good for pipes as it would also be more porous.
