How can I extract sodium from table salt without blowing myself up?
I’m using a kiln that can easily make the 800 degrees C that I need to melt sodim chloride, so temperature isn’t a problem.
But I would like to avoid an explosion with the highly reactive materials that I’ll be producing.
Any suggestions?
You can theoretically do it with a powerful enough battery, but not without extreme difficulty and dangerous conditions. If this is a home setup, I’m afraid I would recommend you not try this.
If, however, you are in a lab where you can control conditions, the thing to do is to find or make electrodes that are composed of some inert metal, hook them up to a 9 V battery, and place them in the molten salt. You need to do this in a glove box or some other inert atmosphere, and you need mineral oil or other inert liquid to store the sodium in as soon as it’s gathered at the cathode. Then there’s the matter of discarding the chlorine safely, which will be tricky.
Are you sure you want to attempt this? I mean no offense, but I feel like anyone who would need to ask about this on Yahoo answers should not be doing this experiment.
