New buyer – Kiln! Help!?
Hi there
I am getting my new kiln next week it is Skutt HotStart Pro kiln with digital programmer 240V. I have never used a kiln in my life and I am nervous: They say i have to wash my kiln with its special wash. Do they give you that when you order the kiln? Where do you all keep your kilns for safety? Can you keep in your attic studio room? or in the garage? Mostly I am nervous as I have no clue if it will come with its special first day wash, why do they say you have to wash? I have already bought the ‘paper’ which you can work your glass on it. Please help! thanks x

Kiln wash is a combo of 50% epk(kaolin) and 50% silica…its not really washing but a coating(like white wash).
You generally paint the interior floor with kiln wash(don’t get it on the elements) and one side of the kiln shelves. This helps protect your kiln and shelves from accidental melting of glass/glaze. There are commercially available premixed kiln washes that you can purchase. I do not know if kiln wash comes with your kiln but I tend to doubt it.
Safe placement of a kiln would be in a vented area 2ft or more away from wood or drywall(anything flamable) outside of your living space(fumes are not good to breathe). My kiln is in the workshop outback, it has a garage door that is open when I fire.
