What is the difference between a thermacouple and a pyrometer?
I’m thinking of buying a kiln for glasswork but am unfamiliar with kilns and the terminology associated with them.
Thanks.
Could it be that a thermocouple regulates temperature whereas a pyrometer just tells you what temperature the kiln has reached?
I am mainly familar with a thermocouple on a gas kiln as a safety device. If the gas goes out for whatever reason the thermocouple will shut the gas off upon cooling. Makes sure if e.g. the gas flame gets blown out gas doesn’t keep coming out which may result into an explosion if you try to light it again.
A pyrometer is a thermometer for high temperatures. It can use a thermocouple as a temperatur sensor as the voltage output of a thermocouple depends on temperature, but it doesn’t have to, it could also be a radiation pyrometer and measure infrared radiation. If it’s not a gas kiln, the terms probably refer what kind of device the kiln uses to measure temperature. In this case thermocouple would tell you what specific kind of pyrometer the kiln has.
