How to refinish painted table?
Bought a poorly painted but nice pedestal table. It’s white with a clear varnish of some kind (you can see brush marks and drips). To strip the paint, should i use liquid sandpaper? I’m going to repaint it white, and I want a finish like this Pottery Barn table http://www.potterybarn.com/gift/thm/thmdrk/index.cfm?flash=on&cm_ref . Do I use a satin paint with a satin clear topcoat, or should I use a semigloss clearcoat on top because I’ve got little kids? I don’t want it to be supershiny, but if semigloss is more sensible, I’ll do it. Thanks!
Liquid sandpaper will not strip the paint off, but it will de-gloss the surface. You could strip the paint off though. Or just sand it very well and put 1 coat of Kilz water based stain blocking primer on it. One or 2 coats of a satin or semi gloss white. Clear coat with a non yellowing sealer like Benjamin Moore;s Benwood water based clear or Varathane water based clear for furniture. I have done tests and these two are the most clear. I also recommend using a paint pad to apply the clear coat. 3 coats.
