How do i fire pmc- bronze clay?
I would really like to get into pmc silver and bronze clay but from research I understand you need a kiln to fire bronze clay but this is not necessary for the silver clay,,is this correct? Also where can i buy a reasonable kiln? I have seen a firefly kiln at www.pmc-supply.com but I really have no idea if this is a good brand or not! Since I live on an island in the West Indies ,I am unable to attend trade shows in the Us ,,but i really need help to get started,,,so here it comes,,HELP!!
I’ve been to trade shows where I’ve seen live demos forming silver PMC parts, then they’ve fired them on a camping stove right there at the demo, so it’s true. This is for the PMC3 and ArtClay650 grades. Other grades fire hotter, and either require a kiln or a lot of patience with a torch.
I’d not heard of the bronze clays before, and this piqued my interest. Bronze clay does require a kiln, but more importantly than that, it also requires a gas-tight reaction vessel filled with charcoal to maintain a reducing atmosphere so the copper in the bronze doesn’t oxidize. This vessel could cost you as much as the kiln, and will wear out before your kiln does.
As for the kiln, the Firefly is made by Paragon. They make a pretty good kiln for a reasonable price. You’ll have to see about the size of the reaction chamber though. That Firefly looks pretty small. You may need a larger unit. Fortunately they make many larger units.
