You could try some kiln cement. It usually works best on the walls and floors of a kiln, but it may work on a shelf. You can buy it from places like Amaco. You could try filling in the crack and see how it works. Dick Blick also has it. You mix it with water and repair the area. If you have a large area to repair, you mix in some coarse grog and fill in the hole.
