How to use a paragon kiln?
my sweet hubby gifted me with a paragon quikfire 6 kiln – the cutest little thing! I’m interested in doing metal clay and some glass jewelry making, maybe small thrown clay pieces. How do i begin? do i need to use a kiln wash first? what kiln furniture do i have to have? any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Yes, you absolutely need to do a kiln wash first. The type of kiln furniture really depends on the size kiln and what you are going to do first. Each type of art, requires different paraphernalia. If your kiln is any decent size at all, you probably want to set it up on fire bricks, (heat resistant blocks) that will prevent the surface underneath from getting too hot.
Go to paragon’s website to find out the details about your particular kiln.
Also, if you are going to be making glass beads/pendants, etc… Mandrels can be quite expensive. You can make your own. All you need is to buy an assortment of widths of welding rods. Make sure that they are stainless steel–you don’t want them to melt, and don’t let them sell you the ones coated with flux. Cut them down to manageable lengths with a pair of bolt cutters. (You can use a bench grinder, if you wish, to smooth the ends.)
