Venting a kiln!!! SCARY?
I have recently purchased a J-230 L&L econo kiln. It’s used but in pretty good condition. My problem is I don’t know where I can put it. Before I bought the thing I was planning on putting it in my basement and putting fans in two windows that would be on either side of the thing. Well since then I’ve read a bit more and MAN it’s kinda scary. I suppose my question is how important is venting a kiln? Can I get away with two windows with box fans in them? Or do I have to invest in a $400 kiln vent…thanks in advance
It is an electric kiln…do not put kilns on decks…BAD IDEA. The deck is flammable and after a few heating of the kiln the wood will dry out and eventually combust. Then woosh your house burns down and your kiln falls through the deck and smashes on the jagged rocks below.
In a small enclosed area like a basement, probably best to attach the vent. It will benefit your kiln as well as your health. You might want to check your local health/fire codes as well.
