How much does it cost to run a small kiln?
How small? And are you just using it as part of a hobby or are you thinking of small-scale commercial production – as in maybe firing a dozen items a day to sell on consignment? A hobbyist should be able to get by on only a few dollars a month worth of electricity to power an adequate kiln. Your costs will depend on how much you use it. (I’m assuming you’re firing pottery).
Someone suggested a masonry kiln in the backyard using wood or coal: If that sounds appealing be very, very certain of your local codes regarding burning in your neighborhood before you build such a kiln. Some areas it’s no biggie, while in some you just about have to have a license to fire up a charcoal grille for a couple burgers and hotdogs!
