What is the process & equipment for putting a digital picture on a ceramic plate? I don’t want to outsource.?
I would like to be able to put my artwork onto ceramic plates or tiles myself, without sending a digital file to someone else to do. I assume I need some blank ceramic “templates” and a kiln but I really have no idea. Can someone please provide an overview and tell me the correct ceramics terminology to search for to find out more. Thanks.
I don’t think you can do all yourself unless you screenprint it – which means that your images has to be suitable for screenprinting. But there are plenty of companies which offer to print you a custom ceramic decal (they use special pigments, so you can’t do you on your home printer) you could fire them on, I think around 1400-1500F. But if you don’t already own a kiln I would expect that it will be much cheaper to have a company do all for you. A kiln can set you back from $100 (tiny) to $2000, and the electricity for firing is not really cheap either.
Undecorated mugs, plates etc. are usually called blanks.
The other alternative is painting/drawing directly on blank ceramics. There is a wide variety of different techniques depending how involved you want to get in ceramics.
