How can I finish unfired ceramic pieces at home?
I’m an amateur crafter trying to make decorative, not for eating, clay leaf dishes (leaf pressed in to make impression) for holiday gifts.
I don’t have access to a kiln, or professional glazes. Can I paint unfired pieces without weakening them?
Is there some way I could bake it in a home oven to finish it? I know this would not achieve the same temperature.
What type of paint should I use? Any technique advice?
Without a “bisque’ firing of the greenware it will be very brittle. Bisque firing temps run between 1000º to 2500º. Try Sculpey™ or Das™ clays which can be oven baked or air dried then paint with an acrylic paint. These can be varnished to look like a glaze.
